Light grey Beetle?

My wife has just found this "Beetle? in our bedroom. It is light grey in colour, with three indentations running down its back. It has 3 pairs of legs all at the front end. A black face and 2 antena. It seems to drag the back end round and has left deposits in the jar in which it is now residing of a white creamy mixture. It is about 1 cm in length.
Can anyone help with identification and what do I do with it? Is it safe to put outside?
Is it a beetle?

Not a lot of information to go on there I'm afraid.

Did it have a hard shell like back? I'm just wondering if it might be one of the many moths which fold their wings along their backs and can look a bit like beetles.

But as it was indoors I suppose the first place for you to start is with the Carpet Beetle (check in the Gallery). If that looks correct, you may have problems as their larvae do eat wool based carpets.

Both beetles and moths are rather specialised subjects so I can only hope that an expert will now respond with better suggestions.
