| | | Sawfly for ID Image taken yesterday. This looks very similar to Allantus cinctus except for lack of two yellow bands on abdomen. The wing veins and leg colours just about match though.
Thanks

| | | Re: Sawfly for ID I tried running that specimen through the Aidgap Sawfly guide and came up with Tenthredinidae family (no surprise there) but I soon found that there just isn't sufficient details in the wings to continue much further.
Going for a pictorial journey. I thought Blennocampinae family looks possible Tenthredinidae - Allantinae, Blennocampinae and, of course, Allanthus with 9 species (mostly from woodland locations) falls into that category.
So I suspect that you are on the correct road; but I don't have enough experience with sawflies to give any firm advice. |

Bird ID is so straight-forward and to think I thought it difficult at the start . I am struggling with insects and invertibrates with such diverse families and with clever mimickry to add to the melting pot.
