Beetle in dung

[Orange Tip]

In a small heap of foul smelling dung there were at least 2 brightly coloured beetles- black with orange stripes on its wing cases. There was possibly larvae/eggs with them. There were bones in the dung?mink.

I think the beetle was Nicrophorus investigator by looking at charts but the descriptions say it feeds on cariron. Would it also feed in dung with animal remains.

Hi there...i'm not sure what exact species your beetle is, i believe (could be wrong) there is four others that this could be confused with?

Yes they have been found occasionaly on dung. I've found your mentioned species inside large fungi. I don't know how common this is though and what sort of material they are looking for. I suppose with yours there is a high volume of animal matter in the dung/scat?
