i saw this shield bug the other day, probably the biggest i've actually seen. could someone please tell me what kind of shield bug it is?

It is a Dock Bug Coreus marginatus

| | | Re: shield bug id please Have a close look at the original photo, Graham. C. marginatus should have a couple of small horn like structures between the antennae.
I think there is something similar there but can't be totally certain. If they are missing, it is one of the other Coreus species. |

| | | Re: shield bug id please I agree ,but the first thing I looked for was the the two inward-spines between the antennae,which I believe that I can see Graham's picture,in the red circle,abeit even less clearly on my copy ,Geoff. 
But even if you can't see that look at those big square shoulders in the blue circle,which rules out Syromastus rhombeus and Enoplops scapha,and Gonocerus acuteangulatus is much more slender in proportion than the Dock Bug.
