I have a bee colony living in my Chimney, they have been there for about 10 years and can be fascinating to watch, however I am not sure what brand of Bee they are, can anyone help?
Kind regards

You are lucky to have a wild population of the Honey Bee, Apis mellifera. I guess they manage to keep warm in your chimney and survive the winter, I imagine it's not used.

Hi Janet,
Yes the bees moved in the year after the chimney was last used, so about 10 years ago. They swarm once or twice a year but other than that I only really see dead ones in the garden. The garden rarely if ever gets wasp or many flies etc, even tho there are horses to every edge. I am seeing more and more bumble bees.
So would this type of bee normally die off in the winter?
Kind regards

| | | Re: A Bee to identify You certainly have a lot there! Wild Honey Bees are on the decline, said to be due to the Varroa mite which carries a virus. There's probably several other reasons such as the use of chemicals both on crops and in gardens.
Your chimney must help them overwinter, and they must be quite healthy. Honey Bee Health at Risk!
More info on them.. The RSPB: A to Z of a Wildlife Garden: Honey bee
Keep up the good work..
