| | | Small black fly About 7mm long from woodland ride. I think it is a scatopsid and the nearest I can find is Scatopse notata but this seems to have darker wings than those illustrated. |

| | | Re: Small black fly Morning Peter,
It's the true St. Mark's Fly, Bibio marci - female.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Small black fly I'd say Fever fly, Dilophus fibrilis female.
Smaller than St. marks fly, with a ring of little spines around the bottom of the front leg tibia.

| | | Re: Small black fly Sorry, I think it's actually a Dilophus sp.! Still a Bibionidae member, but the number of spines at the basal end of the front tibia are a key part here - Bibio has just two spines.
I thought 7mm was a little small, I just checked and the male marci I collected yesterday is 12mm long! EDIT: Just beaten to it by Adam!

| | | Re: Small black fly I've been thinking about this all day ( off & on - I do do other things ) because I wasn't happy about the size. I had just decided it was Dilophus fibrilis & decided to post it, only to find that I was well beaten ! At least I have the satisfaction of identifying it myself
Anyway, thanks again Jason & Adam | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
