| | | Tiny red insect for ID I took this photo in Perthshire, Scotland a couple of weeks ago and can't work out a name for this fella.
A very small insect, no longer than 2mm in length on a beech tree. Can anyone ID for me?

| | | Re: Tiny red insect for ID Yes, a velvet mite, probably Eutrombidium rostratus, which is carnivorous and so, as Dave said, good to see in the garden and elsewhere.
Not to be confused with the red spider mites, Panonychus ulmi et al, which are pests: they are broader at the back, in contrast to the velvet mites which are broader at the front!

These are known as Giant Velvet Mites, and good to see Paul being able to name it to species-level! I had no idea they could be...
