| | | Re: Insects for id. Evening Graham,
The first is a Chironomidae member, but I'm not sure which. Any other angles? The second is a distinctive-looking Ichneumon Wasp but I wouldn't like to try going further. The next is an Anthomyiidae fly, and the last looks good for Syrphus torvus to me, though admittedly the hairs here are very fine, short and only show up from one or two angles ( either way this'll be the exceptional image quality needed to show the fine hairs on the eyes - not all image sensors/macro lenses would be sensitive enough).
What lens do you use?
Five and six are here: and
...5 is a Syrphus sp., and 6 is very familiar, I just can't place the name!
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: Insects for id. Jason,
It's a Canon MP-e65. Those last two shots were taken at about 1:1 as it's not exactly a small fly.
I don't have any other angles for the first one unfortunately. |

| | | Re: Insects for id. Number six I think is a Parhelophilus sp. (there are 3 species of course hard to separate) Based on the looped wing vein, stripes on the thorax and abdomen and orange antennae.
I think this is a female and then the long black hairs by the upper coners of the eyes may indicate that this is Parhelophilus Frutetorum. But I could very easily be wrong!

It really was that colour, it was it's most striking feature. |

However, the problem is not the shot (which is excellent) the problem is me! Being a bit self-taught with Stubb's book I'm not 100% sure if the dark hairs at the corner of the eyes that I can see are dark enough or indeed if they are at the right 'top corner' of the eye!!
