Hi

A flesh-fly of some description, I'm pretty sure of that.

Found in Fife today, in grassland.

My immediate thought is the charmingly named Sarcophaga carnaria. Can anyone tell me if there are similar things which can be confused with this?

Evening Iain,

Well, I think it would be safest and best labelled as a Sarcophaga sp., really. There are a few such as Nyctia halterata and Metopia spp., but with the typical type you've depicted it's most likely done by dissection of a specimen to refer to the genitalia. I wonder if bristle placement helps?

I believe we have about 50+ species in the UK from the Sarcophagidae family.
