| | | Insect with bizarre goggle eyes Stony Stratford, Bucks. On fence near large pond.
Help with identification appreciated and if anyone knows what purpose those weird, turret-like eyes serve - I'd just love to know .

| | | Re: Insect with bizarre goggle eyes It's a male Mayfly Bruce. The bigger eyes might act as floats.

| | | Re: Insect with bizarre goggle eyes Thanks Janet. So do males of all mayfly species have these turret-like eyes?

| | | Re: Insect with bizarre goggle eyes I don't really know the answer to that, to say yes would be a guess but I imagine so. The male I had had big eyes anyway.

| | | Re: Insect with bizarre goggle eyes This is certainly a Mayfly of the order (Centroptilum Luteolum) quite a common insect in the U.K.normally seen from april/sept.Breeds in steams and lakes preferring stony and gravel on the bottom of either to aid egg hatching. As to the size of eyes on the males this could be an attractant to females nobody really knows. They are born without a mouth so obviously do not feed thro their short life, round about 2/3wks max.Their purpose is solely to reproduce.Out of the 47 different species in Britain there are a few that have "Bog Eyes"
Roly.
