| | | Timberworm beetle - Lymexylidae Can anyone help to confirm an identification for this beetle, which I think is a Large Timberworm beetle, Hylecoetus dermestoides or something very similar?

| | | Re: Timberworm beetle - Lymexylidae Looks very much like it - I've never seen one but they do have distinctive antennae and abdominal tip. Fascinating beasts: THE LARGE TIMBERWORM BEETLE HYLECOETUS DERMESTOIDES IN SHRAWLEY WOOD |

| | | Re: Timberworm beetle - Lymexylidae Ok thanks Paul. Yes, I saw that link when I was trying to ID it, which made me think I'd found the right species. I thought it was a large species of soldier beetle when I took the photo, but the odd antennae ruled that out and everything else looks right for H. dermestoides, but it was new to me too. A fascinating fungus garden grower as you say, like leafcutter ants.

| | | Re: Timberworm beetle - Lymexylidae Good spot. I've only seen that three times - two occasions in Shrawley Wood (Worcestershire) and another time in Wybunbury Moss in Cheshire. It's a nice insect to see and they should be around now (if the weather warms up), especially in places with moribund birches.

| | | Re: Timberworm beetle - Lymexylidae OK, thanks, yes I'll keep a look out for them in future. I'm sure they're easily overlooked and I first saw it in flight (quite slow and cumbersome) and assumed it was a soldier beetle, but it looked a bit big so I followed it until it landed and realised the patterning was different; only really noticed the short antennae when I checked the photos later.
