| | | damsel for id please! Saw several of these on Monday 3rd May at Ham Wall Nature Reserve in Somerset. They were sat on leaves near the pond in overcast conditions. I had seen some large reds earlier in the day and just assumed these were tenereals of the same species. Other species I saw included Hairy Dragonfly, male azure damsel and bluetailed damsels. However, I uploaded a pic to Flickr and someone there has identified it differently - what do you all think?   |

| | | Re: damsel for id please! This is a female Large Red-eyed Damselfly, Erythromma najas. The bright yellow colour is typical of immatures of both sexes, with females showing short, or broken, antehumeral stripes. Immature males generally lack antehumeral stripes and the last two segments of the abdomen are pale brown (becoming blue when mature). |
