| | | Sepsis cynipsea? Can anyone say what species this Sepsid is? Sepsis cynipsea? as legs and abdomen are maybe too dark for S. punctum or S.fulgens? but light can be deceptive and there may be other critical characters I don't know about...or can't be seen in this photo. I have a few more images, but the fly was moving around a lot displaying, flicking its wings in typical fashion and few are sharply focused.

| | | Re: Sepsis cynipsea? Your specimen certainly does appear dark all over but I'm afraid this really requires an expert, which lets me out!
However, until one comes along, I can only point you towards the Dipteria site, if you haven't already looked here. Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Sepsidae |

| | | Re: Sepsis cynipsea? Hi Geoff, thanks, yes I have checked that Gallery (and mine does "look" most like S. cynipsea to me, but there may be crucial features I'm ignoring) and no-one on that site has responded (unusually) to my posting there which either means it really isn't possible to be sure of the species from photos (or these ones at least!), or Sepsids are considered too common and insignificant to raise any interest! A shame as they're fun to watch scurrying around, flicking their wings as they go!

| | | Re: Sepsis cynipsea? You'd be right about no-one answering on diptera.info, these can be difficult from pics unless they show defining features such as Sepsis punctum does.
I love to watch them too, best to enjoy it and call it Sepsidae sp.

| | | Re: Sepsis cynipsea? Really the best you can say is it's a Sepsis sp. as they have spots on the wings.
Check out some of the threads on diptera.info to see how the experts can't come up with a name that easily.. just enter any species and search. http://diptera.info/infusions/aw_for...ch_results.php

| | | Re: Sepsis cynipsea? OK, many thanks for the advice. I think I'll settle for Sepsis sp. I saw that one Sepsis cynipsea was defined as tiny notches in the front legs were visible, but it needs luck with a photo to catch just the right angle and hit focus on the right spot; tricky with a 5mm moving target...
