| | | Nicely marked cranefly(?) for identification Stony Stratford, Bucks. On Snowberry bush beneath mixed broadleaf trees and close to large pond.
Help with identification appreciated as always:

| | | Re: Nicely marked cranefly(?) for identification Thanks Janet that looks to be a perfect fit. It appears the adults fly from May to October and they are generally found near water margins and marshy areas - so that fits well too.
One interesting bit of info: It seems the name Ptychoptera relates to their 'folded wings' - apparently the wings are creased enabling them to fold up at rest making them look unusually thin - noticable in the pic.

| | | Re: Nicely marked cranefly(?) for identification I looked at NBN, they are well distributed and I have water margins (roadside drain as part of my garden) and a pond. Haven't seen one yet but there's hope! I have the Snowberry bush ( a little left anyway) and mixed broadleaf trees, also close to a large pond.
I guess their wing folding is designed to camouflage them.

| | | Re: Nicely marked cranefly(?) for identification Janet - I've not used NBN before so just gave it a try. Clearly will become an incredibly useful resource in time.
Meanwhile......you do amazingly well with your garden so I'm sure it's just a matter of time .

| | | Re: Nicely marked cranefly(?) for identification Bruce, I have got into the habit if checking distribution as you never know what you might have. I also look on the Dipterists forum site to check the UK list, I go to the 'checklist' then search taxon by name. It seems to work only if you use the genus, then by clicking on the accepted genus name you will get lists of either subgenus first, or straight to species. The Society for the study of flies (Diptera)
Yes I am doing very well in my garden thanks to the macro lens, I think I'm putting Lincolnshire on the map. Eventually I guess I will send my records to county recorders if I ever get time, I still have a lot to ID and that usually ends up a winter job.
