It's a male.The female has more extensive black on the abdominal segments, plus it's thicker set. There are three colour forms of female Large reds. The common one, typica. A dark form melanotium which has the yellow anti humeral stripes. It also has mainly black abdominal segments. The third form is fulvipes which also has black on the abdomen that is in between typica and the male colouring.

I take it this one is the dark form melanotium from what you have said.
Are they fairly widespread - I saw this one today in north Lancashire near Silverdale. |
