| | | Re: Osmia rufa - nesting in my masonry?? Osmia never dig the burrows they live in. They always use existing cavities. |

| | Re: Osmia rufa - nesting in my masonry?? Hi, I'm new on here. I've been looking everywhere for a forum on Mason Bees, with no success. I was wondering if anyone on here could answer a few questions for me? I have had male bees flying around the nest box for weeks now and nearly all my tubes have holes in the ends. Now going on what Chris O'Toole says in his book, a hole at the entrance should indicate that the bees in this tube have hatched and flown.
Well, I then fould some loose cocoons on the floor below my box, I went to pick them up assuming they were failed bees when one of them buzzed! The 3 loose eggs then hatched as I watched and some very sleepy, small bees emerged. One went into a tube in the nest box and two just sat on the top. I am now worried that they have been woken too soon and will not survive and I am confused as to how I can have holes in the ends of tubes that have not been completely vacated? This makes me wonder how I can be sure they are empty when I come to clean them out. Any advice on whether these 3 bees will survive and how I will know when to clean them out now I cannot rely on the Chris O'Toole method will be greatly received!
Thanks |
