It was about an inch and a half long in my flower pot a couple of days ago.
I don't think it is a look alike but would appreciate some feedback

It's certainly a hornet and I suspect a queen.
It's a beauty - hornets are one of my favourite insects!

Agreed, Jim. It's a beautiful insect and a nice find, may have hibernated in the plant pot. |

I don't think it had hibernated, I had only just filled this pot with new compost. At a guess I would say it was resting. We watched it for a while after and it was hunting out nooks and crannies which was ok till it took at me!
She was amazing, the patterns are very striking up close!
