Well, they're both Calypterates so you're in the right area. Don't think they're tachinids however. Both could be a Muscid or Anthomyiid, but I'm new to this group so perhaps others might have an opinion.

| | | Re: Fly ID's The first is Anthomyiidae, I think Delia radicum, male.
The second is also Anthomyiidae, looks like a female and males of Anthomyiidae are difficult but females are nearly impossible to ID.
You might find they are a pair, were they in the same place at the same time?
I took pics of a mating pair today, could be D. radicum but I haven't downloaded them yet.
Look at my pics of male D. radicum on diptera.info (blowave). This was confirmed by two experts, from my pics. Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Delia radicum (male) (1)

| | | Re: Fly ID's The general external appearance of many anthomyiids is very similar and comparing images is a very unsound basis for specific identification.

If Tormentil can match all the details as on my fly, and if he can see many bristles on the hind femora, it is a good possibility.
Here's my original ID thread if you wish to get more details... Diptera.info - Discussion Forum: Anthomyiid Delia radicum?
