I have come across a few different queens of both Vespula and Dolichovespula this year.
I thought it might be helpful to others if I post my pics. There are two very useful picture pdf files of British social wasps with images, if you go to 'Resources on extenal websites' you can download these and save to you Documents for easy reference. The Highland Biological Recording Group
To start off, this is a Dolichovespula norwegica queen I saw yesterday.

| | | Re: Queen Social Wasps. I Like the Wasp identification chart, but the Hornet picture is of the European colour form of V. crabro and not the UK colour form. On the continent, the back of the head is brown, whereas in UK it is always yellow. |

I saw the queen several days ago when I opened my greenhouse door, she was too quick for me to get a pic though.
