unidentified insect
Hello,

I am hoping someone can help me identify an insect I saw over the Easter holiday in the French countryside. I am aware that your site is concerned with British insects but it is quite possible that the insect can also be found over here...

It was crossing the road and hard to miss as it's 2- 2.5 cm long. I haven't managed to identify so I'm grateful for any pointers as to what this iridescent blue *massive ant* might be. It has the shape of an ant as you can see but has wings like a beetle. It's a species of Oil Beetle, but not sure exactly which.
