Is this hoverfly Portevinia maculata
On wild garlic in a small damp wood near the S. Devon Coast Path.



Several males present. Size would be correct.

To my untrained eye, this appears to be Portevinia maculata but, if so, it is my first ever sighting so I would appreciate a second opinion.

I'm sure you're right. It looks exactly like ones I found last May in a wood near me, also on ramsons. They're not in flower here yet but I'm hoping to find it on them again.

Thanks Matt. Tomorrow, I will offer this to the County Recorder as a record.

Peter, the wild garlic has just started to flower in a few selected sunnier spots. Here is the proof.
