| | | Two 'flies' for ID...
A number of these two types outside a window today, stayed put until the sun moved round. So only have the underneath view. |

| | | Re: Two 'flies' for ID... Evening Lori,
These are Non-biting Midges from the Chironomidae family - one boy and one girl respectively ( he has the plumose or 'fluffy' antennae, with a high surface area for sensitivity to pick up her scent for mating purposes). They could be from the Chironominae subfamily on account of the front leg posture but I couldn't take it further without the male under a 'scope - you'll see his genitals like a pair of self-facing hooks on the tip of his abdomen.
A revised key has recently been published - at £53, but one I'll think about.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Two 'flies' for ID... They are probably of the genus Chironomus. Species of this are very variable in colour and identification relies of examining the male genitalia and measuring ratios of parts of the legs. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
