| | | Re: Hoverfly for ID 25 Apr 10 Hi all #1, #2 & #5 are all M. scalare. Sorry for posting these
#3 and #4 have darker legs and the pattern on the abdomen is rings w/o orange markings.

| | | Re: Hoverfly for ID 25 Apr 10 Without being able to see more details; I would guess the other 2 are Platycheirus albimanus.
The silver spotting appears correct but there are 2 other similar species. However, they are smaller and less common, so P. albimanus is the most likely. |

Yes, 3 and 4 appear to be Platycheirus albimanus too. I had that today!
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Hoverfly for ID 25 Apr 10 Hi Geoff and Jason,
Thanks for your comments. The hoverfly in #3 had obviously damaged its left wing as it could not fold it back over its abdomen. What surprised me about this hoverfly was that it seemed totally unhindered in flight despite the obvious damage.

| | | Re: Hoverfly for ID 25 Apr 10 It might have only just emerged from a pupa, and the left wing needed drying still? It's possible I should think... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
