| | rare wasp? Hi, yesterday I saw a weird looking wasp type insect in my garden . I think I have identified it as a mud dauber wasp.....I confess I've never seen one before let alone heard of one. I cannot find much information about this insect except that it is not common to the UK and it builds mud nests . I have a rare insect in my garden??
Can anyone help please, regards nursie. |

| | | Re: rare wasp? Now then.... I wonder if you have a photo of this creature? It certainly sounds interesting BUT... we don't have any "mud-dauber" wasps in the UK
Perhaps you might tell us why you thought it was a mud-dauber, and also where you saw this insect. It would help us to help you |

| | | Re: rare wasp? Not having a clue to what it was, I google'd 'yellow and black bug' and some images came up, so I looked thru' them and there it was.....this thin skinny scarey looking insect and it was named as a mud dauber wasp. I showed my partner and he agreed it looked very much like what had visited the garden several times yesterday. I wasn't quick enough to take a pic, it flew off!
It looked quite a sinister insect, didn't buzz, had a yellow and black body and legs and slender wings. It landed in the grass on one occasion. The weather was quite warm and sunny.

| | | Re: rare wasp? Nursie, look up Amblyteles armatorius - the scientific name for a species of Ichneumon Wasp. Is this comparable to what you saw?
There are dozens of insects such as wasps that look similar, and a lot of incorrect identifications out there too. The 'Net contains thousands, dare I say it millions, of images of invertebrates. It allows immediate sharing of material for our benefit, but also gives us access to images of insects from the other side of the world that we just don't have in our own country - it doesn't always tell us which country the site is based in.
Next time you're in your garden, keep your camera close by
