Orange banded sawfly

From beside upland beck. 10mm long. I think it is Dolerus sp.

Yes Dolerus, perhaps aericeps/cothurnatus or something similar.

Going by the only photos I can find on the web D.aericeps has an orange thorax, whereas D.cothurnatus has an orange banded abdomen. I don't know how reliable these are. I see the larvae of both feed on horsetails. I don't remember seeing any where I found it but I'll have a look next time I go there. It is certainly the sort of place where you might expect to find it growing.

I had a similar insect recently, orange banded like yours but with white markings on its thorax. I couldn`t decide if it was a sawfly or an ichneumon. (See my new thread).
