I've keyed it out as one of the Lonchaeidae family but I'm not convinced that's right & feel I may have gone wrong somewhere. I'm sure it's an acalypterate. I'd be grateful for opinions. Thanks. |

| | | Re: Small black fly Thanks John. I obviously went wrong at a very early stage. I was convinced it was an acalypterate because there isn't a complete dorsal suture & the haltere is completely exposed without any obvious sqaumae. So back to the drawing board

| | | Re: Small black fly Not sure about the haltere business, but I agree about the suture - in my 3 specimens it disappears mid-way. As a beginner with Calyptrata I haven't really formed an easy familiarity with the group yet so I don't have much to say that will help. Some characters are at the end of a spectrum of obscurity!
