| | | a beetle that feeds on decaying flesh!? I found some roadkill a couple of days ago and I spotted some beetles crawling out of a gaping hole in the carcass! They were fairly large beetles at about 10-15mm, can anyone point me in the right direction as to what species or genus they might be?

| | | Re: a beetle that feeds on decaying flesh!? Afternoon Jack,
Is there a chance you could return there with a camera? You may get to family with more of a description, but I doubt Genus-level.
Something makes me think Staphylinidae, but I'd prefer a photo.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: a beetle that feeds on decaying flesh!? There was a program on some time ago where museums were using beetles to strip flesh from bones, and from memory the one they were using was something like Domestis immaculatis.
And i also found this link via Google, which refers to flesh eating beetles. Silphidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

| | | Re: a beetle that feeds on decaying flesh!? Silphidae probably. Possible genera are Nicrophorus or Oiceoptoma, representatives of which are very quick at finding carrion. Photos would be needed to confirm this.
