| | | Re: Bumble, fly and hover for ID Afternoon Hed,
The first has the look of a Cuckoo-bee, as I can't see the pollen baskets on the legs. The yellowish line on the abdomen between the white and black makes it look like Bombus vestalis but if the white seems too expansive I'd consider Bombus sylvestris too. I think the former, but I can't quite decide!
The second appears to be a Fanniidae member.
The last is a Bee perhaps from the Lasioglossum group, but I'm not too experienced in that area.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Bumble, fly and hover for ID Yes I have some very similar photos of your third specimen to identify when I am feeling brave enough. I was also suspecting Lasioglossum sp. but getting any further requires specialist knowledge.
ps. For future reference, Hedera, the long antennae, which are jointed in the middle clearly show that it cannot be a hoverfly, even though it may behave and outwardly look similar. Most hoverflies have very short antennae; and even the few longer versions are much shorter than bees. |

| | | Re: Bumble, fly and hover for ID Thank you all! I am amazed by the proliferation of types, and the depth of your knowledge. That's a good tip re antennae, Geoff. I've learnt my new bit for,the day. That bee certainly hovered, but perhaps it was just viewing the flower.

| | | Re: Bumble, fly and hover for ID I am sure the bumble is one of the cuckoos too. Can't do this to species, but B. vestalis, B. bohemicus and B. sylvestris are all possibilities (ie 50% of the species on the UK list!)
The last pics are of female Lasioglossum, and are probably either L. calceatum or L. albipes. many Lasioglossum species are very similar and are tricky to determine confidently, even under a microscope! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
