| | [ID] My first Pseudo-scorpion! Evening all,
I saw my first-ever Pseudo-scorpion today! Very exciting, and definitely a contender for my best find of 2010
I was looking under a slab in the garden for any Spring/Summer species t have become actie, then saw a pretty small red thing. On closer inspection I considered Mite/ Springtail... then I realised. I quickly potted it and got these shots among others. 20/04/2010 Length: 4mm It really is about as pinky as it seems...
Any idea which one?
Thanks for reading!
Take care, Jason |

Nice find, I think these are great little beasties.
Unfortunately the key I've got relies largely on features you can only really get through a scope (number and position of setae etc.). However, going on overall appearance (and particularly the colour) I wouldn't rule out Roncus lubricus.
Steve
(looking again I think I'd go for Chthonius sp. the pedipalps look too thin and the chelcera maybe too large for Roncus)

| | | Re: [ID] My first Pseudo-scorpion! Thanks Mein! Chthonius sp. looks good - thanks Steve! What key do you have?
Bruce - just keep turning over garden slabs/decking and logs in woodland. Consider trapping the specimen and photographing it in lighter circumstances for a better shutter-speed. You too, Mein. |

| I've got a copy of "Synopsis of the British Fauna No.40 - Pseudoscorpions" by Gerald Legg and Richard E. Jones (ISBN - 90 04 08770 2)
Which has descriptions of, and a key to, twenty-six species found in Britain as well as information on their biology, ecology etc.
