| | | Tiny pink fly! Hi All,
This is probably the smallest fly I've ever seen, at about 1-1.5 mm long. Found in grass/moss in Huddersfield at the weekend. Going by the antennae, it must belong to Nematocera, but beyond that I haven't a clue. Help?
Thanks,
Joe |

| | | Re: Tiny pink fly! Going on the tiny flies I have had, I think this belongs in Cecidomyiidae. A lovely pink female! Now you have spotted it, you will find more, they are lovely little things!
I saw one yesterday which was all over a deep red and about 1.5mm, but it flew just as I focused on it.
Janet

| | | Re: Tiny pink fly! Thanks again Janet - I'm sure you're right on the family, even though the venation is not as reduced as in that illustration. |

| | | Re: Tiny pink fly! The venation does have similarities with Sciaridae too, so do the antennae for a female, there's often some cross over features in fly families.
I don't think I have seen a Sciarid with hairy wings like that though.
I have pics of one similar to this one... Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Cecidomyiidae sp. (4)
It was stabbing eggs into my Hemerocallis flower buds! I guess that's what causes the bud burst.
