| | | Insect i.d please Scooped this little chap out of the pond today, It reminds me of a Mayfly, but it seems too small. It's my first casualty of the year, it seems to be damaged. |

| | | Re: Insect i.d please Evening BM,
Is this your photo?
It's actually a Non-biting Midge from the Chironomidae family. If you have a photograph showing the wings closer I may be able to try to get to sub-family level. This one is a male anyway - note the heavier-looking antennae ( actually are they twisted 90'?) and rear claspers. It's the latter bit you need for a species-level ID, gently removed under the microscope.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Insect i.d please Sorry, I can't see the wing venation or tarsi clearly enough - these things are often difficult in field photography!
There is a revised key just been published, if you're interested - it's around £53 and contains about 30% more species than the one in the 70's, and IDs are often based on male genitals, tarsi ratios and wing venation. It's quite a bit, but I may go for it one day... | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
