| | Anybody help identify this beetle? We came across this beauty whilst walking in North Devon on Tuesday. I cannot find it in my various reference books and would be interested to learn more. Grateful for any pointers! Much appreciated. |

| | | Re: Anybody help identify this beetle? They would appear to be starting to wake up now. I saw 3 females and a male today. Meloe proscarabaeus is all black and probably the commonest form.
But that does not constitute an identification! |

Yes, an Oil Beetle ( Meloe sp., scientifically), it may be worth informing your Wildlife Trust about it as it could be a good find depending on which one it is: Contact Us

| | | Re: Anybody help identify this beetle? You can try to send it to the Devon Wildlife Trust as Jason suggested, but I occasionally attempt to send them reports and find that isn't the easiest organisation to deal with.
Jacqui West usually e mails me to send photos to someone else, outside the organisation, and while everybody is friendly I get the impression that some other counties are better organised.
I did recently send in a photo and report of the same species, which is getting passed around the system.
If you do send anything in to them, or if anybody else has done this recently, please give you opinions. The last time, when I e-mailed one of their independent experts, he suggested joining the Entomology section of the Devonshire Association; which I am still considering. http://www.devonassoc.org.uk/sections.htm They do have a couple of North Devon branches.
I'm in the far south!
