| | | Re: What's This Fly Evening Dean, and welcome to WAB!
A great shot. MPe-65?
It's a Window Gnat from the Anisopodidae family. I should be familiar with this one - I pinned one seven days back! Do you have one of the wings, the whole length? I love the thorasic pattern, but you need to see the discal cell and how veins M1 and M2 leave it, to get to genus-level. There are keys that should help, but despite having a good microscope and specimen I haven't been able to get to species-level as it all seems to focus on male genitals - I had a girl. Frustrating.
One shot of the abdomen tip should allow us to sex it at least.
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: What's This Fly Interesting. Absolutely everything I can see ( with invertebrates of course you can't always identify things fully with just photos, however good) is the same as mine, which was a Sylvicola sp. I'm glad I asked you now though, because here M1 and M2 leave the D cell from the same point making your fly an Anisopus sp. Obviously I'd prefer a shot of the wings wide open so it doesn't require as much interpretation, but the image shows it pretty clearly in my opinion so I am happy with that.
As for books, which areas of entomlogy are you most interested in? Maybe post a new thread asking for recommendations. I'll be happy to suggest some
Just to check, because not everyone are - are you aware of Latin names and some abbreviations?

| | | Re: What's This Fly As I mentioned, I pinned one recently - even though mine is from a different genus, you'll notice the strong similarities to the thorax pattern. It just goes to show how careful you have to be!
Some photographs: Side shot, thorasic detail and wing venation
I'm currently working on a Braconid wasp, though I'm not really expecting to get to genus-level even - they're a tough bunch!
