Epistrophe eligans for ID double check please

Near the S. Devon Coast Path, today.



I think Epistrophe eligans is probably correct but this species can be so variable that I would appreciate a second opinion.

The scuttellum looks a bit pale and there is no (or very little) black on tergite 1.

So any opinions?

I would tend to agree with E. eligans.

Afternoon Geoff,

The first Epistrophe eligans record on WAB this year! This is my favourite Syrphid, and one I like to catch up with each year

Tergite 1 is often largely yellow barr the middleline in my experience.

And when I first noticed it, I thought this was just another Eristalis pertinax, so nearly walked past. Then when I looked through the lens and realised that it didn't have Eristalis wings I started thinking about Epistrophe sp.

Just goes to show that you should never make assumptions!
