| | | Unusual ant-like insect Stony Stratford, Bucks. On fence beneath mixed broadleaf trees by large pond.
Size: about 2mm (pls. see scale bar).
This fellah could really move - and in never stopped! I took 36 photos in total, shooting whenever it looked like it might be in focus. I got maybe 5 keepers!
Help with identification appreciated:

Yes this is a new one on me too. Even before I saw it magnified through the viewfinder I knew it was something different by the way it moved. I really hope we (err...well more you WAB experts ) are able to narrow this one down.

| | | Re: Unusual ant-like insect It's fast, and has the shape of an Assassin Bug nymph. Where could that take us to?

| | | Re: Unusual ant-like insect Morning Bruce,
Interesting one! My first thought - after a load of confusion! - was that it's similar in shape to the nymph of Miris striatus, but not that one. I wonder about it being a nymph from the Mirinae sub-family? I've also considered Nabidae for a second, but must admit I don't really know! I'll look forward to Joe's thoughts on this one
Post any of the other four up too, they may help!
Take care, Jason

| | | Re: Unusual ant-like insect Interesting thought Janet .
Jason, here's a dorsal shot - hope it helps.
During the course of about an hours searching I located a further 3 of these in the same general area - so several more shots available.

| | | Re: Unusual ant-like insect I'm still really confused by this one. I do agree that something akin to Miris is most likely, but I'm worried it might be an early instar that doesn't look much like the later ones. Did you find it on or with any particular tree? It has the look of a predator, so it could easily just be scuttling around in the warmth.
You do of course have the option of trying to rear one. You'd need to keep it well fed (after working out what it eats!), but if you can keep it happy, then at least we'll have an answer! |

Here's one from today taken "on the run". The rostrum is visible in this shot:

| | | Re: Unusual ant-like insect If you've seen them two days running, I suggest you keep an eye on them as they develop ( as I'm sure you're planning anyway!) and re-post images here frequently. I'm sure one stage will shout something at Joe! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
