| | | Black Fly with long abdomen for ID Wondered whether anyone could help me with an ID for this fly? It was only about 15mm long (if that). Several of them sitting on a camelia bush at friend's garden today.

| | | Re: Black Fly with long abdomen for ID Evening Jane,
It's a Fever Fly from the Bibionidae family. I can't quite see the wings enough to say for sure but Dan ID'd one earlier that had partly brown-stained wings as Bibio lanigerus. The fly here's right-hand wing appears to show a tint... but it may not be the same as that. Do you have any additional images?
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Black Fly with long abdomen for ID I have had these too, and last year. The legs would suggest Bibio johannis although the pics on diptera.info shows one with brown legs and thinner femora, which Bibio lanigerus seems to have. That pic might be wrongly named, or there's something else I should be looking at! Last year I named mine B.lanigerus but I can't remember why or where I got that from. Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Bibionidae
Time to put mine on diptera.info for ID I think.
Janet

| | | Re: Black Fly with long abdomen for ID Thanks Jason and Janet. Unfortunately that's the one and only pic I have of it. Still, it looks like I can at least record it as a Bibionidae sp.
Many thanks for your help. Another one I've not seen before!
