| | | Green ground beetle Found on a riverbank today. 10mm long. I wondered if it was Harpalus affinis, but I'm not sure whether the legs are too dark. |

| | | Re: Green ground beetle Hello again Dogghound
As the legs are uniformly black could it be Pterostichus versicolor ? Harde's field guide says they are often mistaken for each other & that this is a distinguishing feature. |

| | | Re: Green ground beetle Hi there...i was just about to come on and suggest Poecilus versicolor. The setae on the hind tibiae and the unpunctured frons seem right for this species...though i could be looking at it all wrong? |

| | | Re: Green ground beetle The punctured/unpunctured head is the best character. Not quite sharp, unfortunately, but I believe I can detect punctures, therefore I agree with the Dogg. I would have expected to see more hind-tibial setae, however, so I think there is an element of uncertainty. Leg colour not relevant.

| | | Re: Green ground beetle Hello John
I've had a look with the microscope and I can't see any pits on the top of the head. Looking at the NBN Gateway maps P.versicolor is more likely in Cumbria. The size also fits better.
Peter

The good old microscope - nice and conclusive. What magnification are you using?
