| | | Small Wasp with black/red/black abdomen (?) Several (about 10) of these flying low over a small part of the lawn and over rough ground by the garage this morning (by my "bee paradise" - which is made up of a sunny area covered with dead logs, sandy bank and bee tubes). Every now and then one of them would land for a few seconds. Very small about 10mm long. Very distinctive black/red/black band on abdomen.
I thought digger wasp maybe?
Any ideas? Cheers. Jane |

| | | Re: Small Wasp with black/red/black abdomen (?) No ideas yet on my wasp? I'd be pleased to know if it was a digger wasp or something else. Not bothered about the particular one... just a rough idea of species would be great.

| | | Re: Small Wasp with black/red/black abdomen (?) Many thanks oxycera. What is it about the wasp that defines it as an Ichneumon? Is it the long antennae (Ichneumon have at least 16 segments don't they?). Then I'll know what to look out for next time. Cheers. Jane |

| | | Re: Small Wasp with black/red/black abdomen (?) Yes, that's a good clue, ichneumons have far more segments than sphecid wasps and other aculeates.

| | | Re: Small Wasp with black/red/black abdomen (?) That's true, but after a certain amount of experience its not really necessary.
