| | | Solitary Bee with Foxy-Red Thorax I was looking for solitary bees in our local churchyard and practically fell over this one at my feet feeding on lesser celandine by the side of a hedge.
Very red thorax and a few white looking hairs on the abdomen and leg. Large. Approx 15-20mm.
I'm thinking it must be an Andrena sp. but I'm not experienced enough in their ID to know which one.
Can anyone help?
Cheers. Jane |

| | | Re: Solitary Bee with Foxy-Red Thorax OK, I'm going to take a stab at this (bound to be wrong) how about possibly Andrena haemorrhoa (female) - personally I think this is too big to be A. haemorrhoa as I've read it's only 11mm, or maybe Andrena nitida (female) which at 14mm is more of a possibility - however I've read that A. nitida has a "jet black abdomen" and this one obviously has some white hairs on the abdomen...
Any other thoughts? Would appreciate some help with this pretty bee... Cheers. Jane |

A. nitida could be a possibility then?

Jane | Yes I would say so Jane, look at the pollen baskets, the pic on BWARS does show some white hairs on the abdomen.

| | | Re: Solitary Bee with Foxy-Red Thorax Thanks Janet. It's a new one for me... but I'm very chuffed that I came to the same conclusion as you. Looking at the BWARS pic it does have white on the abdomen as well. Great!
Let's hope for some more sun tomorrow and more bees!
Cheers. Jane |

| | | Re: Solitary Bee with Foxy-Red Thorax Great going!
It's important to check the pollen basket hairs, Andrena haemorrhoa has yellow to white hairs and orange hairs on the tail end.
It' supposed to be a very good day tomorrow too, I'm having a great time taking pics! Today wasn't quite as productive as yesterday, they came out in force then.
