| | Large, beige, furry wasp/bee? I know this may sound a little strange, and unfortunately I don't have any pictures.
My mum once came across what she described as a big fat, furry beige flying insect, which had the body shape of a wasp. But she is sure that it didn't have strpies and it was furry The buzzing sound it made was very low/deep. It flew in my bedroom window and then went out again, before she could get a picture. This was a few years ago, and despite searching on the internet, we've never found out what it was. Does anyone here know what it could have been? We've even had people saying she must have imagined it, but she didn't!
I'm not 100% sure what time of year it was but I think spring/summer. The house we lived in then was in the countryside and more or less next to a pond, lots of trees etc Not sure if that helps or not in identifying it. |

seen during the day collecting nectar, quite large and look beige from beneath. If you have never seen one before it can be a surprise
there is some good pictures if you google it. |

First off - was this in the UK? I imagine it was.
I second the thoughts of Bee-fly. My other thought was the same as Dan's with a Drone Fly - but I suppose of the two then Bee-fly would be more of a show-stopper in appearance and presence.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Large, beige, furry wasp/bee? Hmmmm depending on the time of year, may well have been a cockchafer/junebug. Very loud and low pitched buzzing and wld look fairly furry, tho a little more beetle-like than a wasp type thing I suppose.

| | | Re: Large, beige, furry wasp/bee? I'm going with Hummingbird Hawk Moth on this one. They can appear greyish, especially if viewed looking towards light coming from a window, I'd imagine. Plus, their wings move so fast they blur, thus muddying their colour. They also make an audible hum!
Let us know, HyperKitty, when you have decided with your mum as to what it might have been

| | | Re: Large, beige, furry wasp/bee? I'm not sure mine is the same thing...
Location: My back garden, North London.
Time: May 2010
Details: It was large (bigger than a bumble bee), dark, very buzzy and fast in flight. I think I saw some metallic green on its back. The thing that was very distinctive on my insect was its long trailing back legs which seems to rule out rose chafer. I haven't done this before so apologies if I have placed this in the wrong section! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
