| | | Black & White Bee for ID - Andrena sp? I photographed this bee today at our local church meadow in Corfe Mullen, Dorset - feeding on Lesser celandine
I wondered if it could possibly be an Andrena cineraria?

| | | Re: Black & White Bee for ID - Andrena sp? Thanks. That has really made my day. Looking at the NBN Gateway species map there is a big 10k gap right over my village. OK, it doesn't mean it hasn't been seen here before, but it would be great to stick us on the map! |

I saw a few bees just like that today on Chalk downland, is there anything like A.cineraria? ,theres a dot on the N.B.N map already somehow, is it a v.distinctive bee?,if so I may now be able to identify several bees.
Jason.

| | | Re: Black & White Bee for ID - Andrena sp? It's the first one I've ever seen, but I don't believe there are too many black and white solitary bees in the UK. Very distinctive looking.
Do you mean there's a dot on the map where you are? It isn't a particularly rare bee I don't think... just one that I haven't seen before.
Other's on here can probably tell you more than I can...

| | | Re: Black & White Bee for ID - Andrena sp? Yes, there was a dot on the NBN map already(this map does show it to be rather widespread)which covered the site that I saw it on today,in Hants.
I don't know that many bees ,so it would be great if I had just got a new bee lifer that easily, but you know the drill, first check for look-a-likeys.I'll do a bit more digging on the web, just to make sure.

| | | Re: Black & White Bee for ID - Andrena sp? There were squares filled in all around where I live - but not my 10k square... so I was pleased.
Good luck with your digging!

| | | Re: Black & White Bee for ID - Andrena sp? Andrena cineraria is historically quite uncommon. Up until the early 1990's it was only known from a couple of sites (1 on Purbeck and another on Lewesdon Hill) In the last 20 years it has gone nuts, and can be very common. I have seen it in Wimborne, The Cranborne Chase woods at Scrubbity Barrows, Toller Porcorum, and all over cricket pitches at Bryanston and Clayesmore!
It is really abundant around Salisbury and it nests in my garden! |

| | | Re: Black & White Bee for ID - Andrena sp? Hi Stuart. Don't worry, I know I haven't found something rare (if only!), but I was quite pleased to see it all the same. First one I've ever seen - I thought it was a very striking bee - I'll be looking out for it.
You're very lucky to have it nesting in your garden. |

When you are next up this way, bring your camera. Some really impressive aggregations of nests up here!
