Saw this little chap resting on top of some frogspawn this afternoon. The nearest match I can see is a common ground beetle but the colouring doesn't look right to me.

Evening Mike,
Once I would have said Carabidae, but from a similar thread a while ago it turned out to be Tenebrionidae - which I believe this is. Apparently you have to look at where the antennae fit onto the head as a differenciating factor between these families ( probably among others, and depending on species - this one has a superficial Carabid feel to it).

It is a tenebrionid and it looks like Nalassus laevioctostriatus. There's more information on this site: http://www.thewcg.org.uk/

It was about 1/2" long. Not dead as there was a bit of movement but not very active so it may have been on it's last legs. | | |
