i noticed loads of these little red insect on the trees on the way home from my local shops, could someone please tell me what they are?

Your insects are generally known as Giant Velvet Mites on account of their moderately bigger presence than the small red dot-type relatives ( velvet/ spider mites) that are more often seen.
You do sound organised, taking your camera out like that!

I have to admit i never take my camera out everywhere, but i do have a 5 mp camera on my mobile phone which always comes in handy. Mind you my wife is used to me cutting our conversations short to photograph something lol
