| | | Re: My first hoverfly of 2010 Afternoon Hed,
Close - same sub-family! Try Dasysyrphus albostriatus.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: My first hoverfly of 2010 I've seen some droneflies, Eristalis tenax, recently , but this morning saw my first Marmalade Fly, Episyrphus balteatus, sat on an open Coltsfoot flower on Horsenden Hill. |

| | | Re: My first hoverfly of 2010 The basic difference here, Hedera, is that the yellow bars/bands go straight across the abdomen with Syrphus but the inner ends point forwards with Dasysyrphus albostriatus.
That is a bit basic and there are other things to consider but it is a good generality from which to start. Other members of the Daysyrphus family have yellow markings which are unlike Syrphus.
It is relatively early for D. albostriatus though, so conditions must be warming up nicely now. |
