| | | Northerly Bee Flies!
Reading the posts about bee flies, I notice that they all seem to be fairly southerly in Britain. This one was taken in North Northumberland, Easter 2007, and there were quite a few of them on this river bank of glacial drift. |

| | | Re: Northerly Bee Flies! Well, there's northerly and northerly! They're certainly pretty abundant in Yorkshire, even on higher ground. I don't have any distribution data but I would certainly expect to see them round about sea level considerably further north than this .... |

This individual is Bombylius major scientifically, if you wished to know! A nice shot it is too.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Northerly Bee Flies! They are abundant in N.Yorkshire, although i suspect they are dependent on hosts and habitat. Also some insects seem to show a strange absence from some areas. |

| | | Re: Northerly Bee Flies! Up north I tend to see them in the Carboniferous Limestone areas with their associated flora, eg Silverdale in Lancs. I've seen them fairly often on my regular walk round Eccup Res', north of Leeds too. Though I have never seen them in the South Pennines where I live. Here the underlying geology is more acid shales, sandstones and grits.
