| | pink 'worms' in garden pond In the last week I can see fairly long - up to 10cm or more - thin, pink 'worms' in the pond. They seem to be multiplying and are more active at night. They also appear to be winding through frog spawn masses. What are they, are they harmful to the spawn tadpoles or frogs? if they are a parasite of some sort how can I get rid of them? |

| | | Re: pink 'worms' in garden pond They are possibly chironomid fly larvae. The red forms tend to be found in water with low oxygen content. These larvae possess no threat to frogs or other livestock. |

| | | Re: pink 'worms' in garden pond Because its been quite wet lately they may just be earthworms that have come out at night and managed to fall or crawl into the pond. Ive seen loads exposed on the tarmac. Great food source for the birds and amphibians right now just when they need all the energy they can get!

| | | Re: pink 'worms' in garden pond Hi
Thank you for your replies. I don't think they're thin enough to be hair worms. I think I'm going to fish a few out tomorow and have a good look at them. I didn't think earth worms would live in the pond like this. Will try to get a picture for better identification. Need to find out what they are, as I've dreamt about them last 2 nights - not pleasent! |

| | | Re: pink 'worms' in garden pond I dont think they are living there if they are earthworms. More kind of drowning..............slowly!
