| | | 1st Bee-fly. Spring must be here. I saw my first bee-fly of the year in the garden. Heard it's little high pitched sound, then spotted it on a fence. Didn't have my camera to hand, so no shot I'm afraid. Anyone else seen them yet?

| | | Re: 1st Bee-fly. Afternoon Jules,
No, I haven't. Never, in fact! I've started my field trips three months earlier than usual, so maybe not too surprising then! This year will be the year, I hope.
Did you see the wings to get an idea about the species? Thanks for letting us know.
Take care, Jason |

Take care, Jason | Oh the common one Jason, I'm sure. Bombylius major.
If someone could make me one, I'd have one as a cuddly toy!
They do tend to hang around autumn leaf litter, so keep your eyes peeled.
Bring on the insects!

Jason if you can find any solitary bee nests (banks and open ground with nests and flowers) particularly Andrena fulva (here N Yorks.), but also other Andrena as well as Halictus and Colletes. You stand a good chance of seeing one, they arnt particularly rare. |
