| | | Cranefly - Nephrotoma Sp? feeding. Can anyone confirm my tentative ID for this pretty yellow cranefly as Nephrotoma appendiculata?
Photographed on 27.6.09 in Wiltshire, feeding on Common hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium) flowers.

| | | Re: Cranefly - Nephrotoma Sp? feeding. I'm afraid that my Tipulidae knowledge is rather limited so the best I can do is to point you towards this site Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Tipulidae although you may well already be familiar with the Dipteria site.
There are a few Nephrotoma experts on this forum so hopefully one will be along shortly. |

| | | Re: Cranefly - Nephrotoma Sp? feeding. Thanks Geoff for that tip... The shot has been up on the general invert ID area of Diptera.info for a week or so, with no responses, hence the extra posting here, but I didn't know there was a Tipulidae subsection. As you say, I may just need to be patient and the right expert may happen across my photo on one site or other, I did just get a mosquito ID confirmed today after a week.

| | | Re: Cranefly - Nephrotoma Sp? feeding. Many thanks "bugbotherer" for the steer towards Nephrotoma flavescens rather than N. appendiculata. I'm adding a different shot of the same insect with a higher angle of view in case it helps to be sure. The location was on limestone grassland, so the habitat may be pretty much right.
