| | | Springtail Neanura muscorum? Hi,
I had this springtail first appear on my pond in mid December after the hard frosts. It's barely 1mm long and with being thin is hard to spot.
It looked disappointed at the thing in the pond, I have some very small greyish ones so wondered if this was a cast off skin.
Could it be anything else? There's so many!

| | | Re: Springtail Neanura muscorum? Evening Janet,
It looks OK for it, but I suppose the best thing is the microscope. It seems you need to see the eyes of this one! Still, I don't know of too many look-alikes so I imagine it's correct/near.
The 3rd/4th shot with the apparent skin forms an interesing couple of photographs, I wonder...
Take care, Jason |

I've looked at springtails until I'm cross-eyed! Something doesn't seem to quite fit, but I haven't come across another with this colour. That doesn't mean it isn't something else though.
I need more magnification, I think I can fit tubes to my macro and teleconverter. If anyone knows what is compatible with the Nikon D40X, 105mm VR and 2x TC please let me know.
