| | | Pond life ID needed Evenin' All!
Anyone got any idea what this is?
Living in a freshwater pond in Hurst Woods. I'm assuming it's an insect larva of some sort but can anyone narrow it down further than that?
Any help gratefully received!

I was trying out a custom tank that I built specifically for pond and rock pool life. I got a few good ones for a first attempt. These are probably the best two...
I'll have to chuck some case building materials into the tank and watch what happens!

| | | Re: Pond life ID needed Here are my efforts: a couple of lesser water boatman, I believe they are Corixa panzeri
missed the focus on this one's head
And a mayfly which I can't get a 100% id on
Istill struggling with defraction of the light from the animal and the flash to them to some extent and Im working on backgrounds and keeping the tank margins out the shotsetc, still its not bad for a 2nd attempt |

I see you're having the same problem with bubbles as I am, though. I'm going out this morning to my local aquarium shop to see if they have a long handled algae scraper that could be used to knock the bubbles off the glass.
Did you make your tank or did you manage to find somewhere that sells them?

| | | Re: Pond life ID needed Im using one of my little tanks that are old fish show display tanks I got from someone who used to display their fish. The bubbles are a pain, I did manage to remove some with a pencil |

I found some old A4 clipframes at work and used three of them. One for the base and the other two each with 5cm cut off one end to make the tank sides. It's fine as a "proof of concept" but the clipframes were old and scratched and not the best quality glass to begin with. It's also probably not a brilliant idea to have the base made of the same thin glass. It's okay at home but will be too fragile for use in the field.
I'm planning to make another with better quality glass and probably using thicker perspex for the base.
I got my small aquarium scraper to knock the bubbles off but more keep forming all the time. I think the water has a lot of gas dissolved in it. It's tap water so it's possibly chlorine in which case it should have evaporated off by tomorrow.
Loads of bubbles are forming on the caddis larva too...
I spent ages cloning all the little specks and blemishes out of this one...
...but now I'm wondering if they help to make it more obvious that the animal is in water...

| | | Re: Pond life ID needed I'd be very happy to Jules, or you can have this one if you like. As I said above it's not perfect but it's not bad either! I'm looking forward to some more ditch-dipping at Northward Hill this summer...
I called into my local glass emporium today and most helpful they were too. We discussed different thicknesses of glass and whether clear perspex would be a viable alternative before deciding on 4mm glass for the tank and 10mm perspex for the base. Perspex would have a tendency to bend slightly which could cause distortion in the pictures, plus it also scratches much too easily. 4mm glass is stronger than the 2mm in my first effort and also higher quality. It does have the downside of being heavier but I'm not planning on lugging it huge distances. I went for 10mm perspex for the base as it's lighter than glass, strong and it doesn't matter if the base gets scratched.
Here's the design I'm building now...
